LIMESTONE

A hard sedimentary rock, composed mainly of calcium carbonate or dolomite, used as building material and in the making of cement.

Limestone is a common type of carbonate sedimentary rock. It is composed mostly of the minerals calcite and aragonite, which are different crystal forms of calcium carbonate (CaCO. 3). Limestone forms when these minerals precipitate out of water containing dissolved calcium.

It is used in the production of cement by heating powdered limestone with clay. Cement is an ingredient in mortar and concrete. Mortar – used to join bricks together – is made by mixing cement with sand and water.

Travertine and Chalk are the two main types of Limestone.
