Given:

Pipe A fills a tank in 1 hour

Pipe B fills a tank in 1.5 hours

Pipe C drains 24 Litres of water in 1 minute

If all the three taps are kept open, when the tank is full, the tank gets emptied in 1 hour.

To find:

The capacity of the tank.

Solution:

Pipe A fills a tank in 1 hour or 60 mins

Pipe B fills a tank in 1.5 hours or 90 mins

Pipe C drains 24 Litres of water in 1 minute

If all open gets drained in 1 hour or 60 minutes

Using LCM method

LCM of (60,90,60) = 180

We will find the least common multiple for the time taken by the pipes and get the total water that will be present at the maximum limit.

                TIME            TOTAL   EFFICIENCY

A               60 min         180          3 litres/ minute

B               90 min         180          2 litres/ minute

A+B-C       60 min         180          3 litres/ minute

to find efficiency of C

A+B-C = TOTAL

The the total efficiency is equal to the sum of the pipes that add water minus the the efficiency of the pipe that drains.

3+2-C= 3

EFFICIENCY OF C = 2 units

2 units = 24 Litres

180 units = 24/ 2 × 180

 =12 × 180

= 2160 litres
