The cycloalkanes react with the chlorine in presence of UV light to give 1- Chlorocycloalkane.

  • The reaction is catalyzed by UV light so the reaction will follow a free radical mechanism.
  • In this mechanism, there will be the formation of Chlorine-free radical first.
  • The chlorine-free radical will then attack the more positive carbon on the cycloalkane.
  • But since all the carbon atoms are the same in cycloalkane, there will be the formation of a monosubstituted cycloalkane.
  • Therefore, the 1- Chlorocycloalkane formation will occur.
