Given :-

  • Speed of ship to city = 15 knots / hour.
  • Speed of ship back to same point = 30 knots / hour.

To Find :-

  • Average speed per hour for the whole journey ?

Solution :-

we know that, when two speed s1 and s2 are given ,

  • Average speed = (2 * s1 * s2) / (s1 + s2)

given that,

  • s1 = 15 knots / hour.
  • s2 = 30 knots / hour.

so,

→ Average speed = (2 * 15 * 30) / (15 + 30) = (2 * 15 * 30) / 45 = 20 knots / hour .

Hence, Average speed per hour for the whole journey is 20 knots .
