For instance, COD at hand defines “whip” as:
strip of leather or cord fastened to handle.
an official of a political party appointed to maintain parliamentary discipline ---.
a desert made from cream or eggs beaten into a light fluffy mass.
a violent striking or beating moment.
and none of the above (barely but 4th definition) seems to me conjure up the thought of “very smart and intelligent.”
What is the origin of the word and phrase of “whip smart” and “smart as a whip”, and why is it "Chiefly American" usage?
