3)Internal forces

Explanation:

  • The center of mass is a position defined relative to an object or system of objects.

  • It is the average position of all the parts of the system, weighted according to their masses.

  • Formula:

                                      r_{COM} = \frac{m_{1} r_{1} + m_{2}r_{2} +m_{3}r_{3} +..  }{m_{1} + m_{2}+m_{3}+...  }

where,

r_{1}, r_{2}, r_{3} represents the positions of    m_{1}, m_{2}, m_{3} respectively.

  • From the above formula its clear that  position of center of mass does not depend on internal forces.
  • However external forces affect the position of center of mass.

Eg - On applying heat energy to an iron rod and molding it into a                      sphere, its position of center of mass changes.
