Complete step by step answer:

The Great Gatsby is a novel written by the American writer ‘F. Scott Fitzgerald’, one of the greatest writers of the twentieth century, in 1925. As the title suggests, this story is about Gatsby, and all the things surrounding that era. The cover of the book looks to be ominous, almost an uninviting colour, but the description on the back is very mysterious, which makes you wonder, what exactly is great about this Gatsby?

There are four major characters in the book, Jay Gatsby, Daisy Buchanan, Tom Buchanan, and Nick Carraway. The story takes place in the fictional places of ‘east egg’ and ‘west egg’ which are said to be in Long Island. The story is narrated by Nick Carraway, who is an author in the book. When he moves to New York, he finds himself enthralled with his new rich neighbour, Jay Gatsby. The book, overall, is a very easy read. The language used is conversational, and it is easy to remember the plot. There are many micro-connections between characters, which are essential to the story. The quote “In his blue gardens, men and girls came and went like moths among the whisperings and the champagne and the stars.”, perfectly summarises the character of Gatsby, that of an old, wise, and extremely mysterious demeanour. Another quote which has stuck is “I like large parties. They’re so intimate. At small parties, there isn’t any privacy.”, said by Jordan Baker, sets the scene for the chaos to come.

The Great Gatsby is a novel for this age. It almost had a predictive nature in its narration. The characters are all likeable, and fulfil their part in the story wonderfully. The book is a message that not every story has a happy ending. For me, this book summed up what it was like to live in New York City in the 1920s, and I would recommend it to everybody.
