Q1.Two blocks linked by a string through a pulley, where the block of mass M slides on
the frictionless table. We assume that the string is massless and the pulley is massless an
frictionless.
Find the magnitude of the acceleration of the two masses
b) Find the tension in the string

Here, in this case mass M is greater than mass m i . e. M > m.

Then for mass M.

T = Ma -------(1)

Again, for mass m.

ma = mg - T -------(2)

ma = mg - Ma

ma + Ma = mg

a(m + M) = mg

a = mg/(m + M)

Again, for finding Tension of the body put the value of 'a' in equation (1).

T = Ma

T = M[mg/(m + M)]

T = Mmg/(m + M)

Hence

Acceleration in the body = a = mg/(m + M) m/s²

Tension in the body = T = Mmg/(m + M) N.
