1. Read the following extract and answer the questions that follow: 1) Icehotel near Jukkasjarvi, a town in Swedish Lapland in Kiruna Municipality, Norrbotten County, is the first and most famous of the ice hotels. In Spring 1990, French artist Jannot Derid held an art exhibition in a specially built igloo on the frozen Torne. The 60-square meter building named Arctic Hall attracted many visitors. One night there were no rooms available in the town, so some of the visitors with reindeer skins and sleeping bags spent the night in the exhibition hall. The visitors raved about their experience and the concept of Icehotel was born. 2) Now in its 25th season, the Icehotel is rebuilt every year using the massive ice resources of the Torne. From a single room structure it has grown into a 5,500 square meter complex. 3) Summer in Jukkasjarvi is intense. The sun shines for 100 days and nights without setting. This melts the snow and transforms the countryside into a vibrant green. As soon as winter begins, a team of snow builders, architects, designers and artists from all over the world gather here. Under the direction of ICE HOTEL ART & DESIGN GROUP, they create each year’s version of Icehotel. 4) Construction work normally begins in October. Vaulted steel pillars are positioned and thousands of tons of snow is moulded around them using snow canons and front loaders to create the super-structure. These pillars are removed after the snow has set. After this, craftsmen and artists refine the interior by carving walls and creating windows, doors, beds, chairs, tables and lamps from ice. 5) The sight, as you open the main reindeer-skin clad doors, is simply breathtaking – a grand, ice pillared hallway illuminated by a spectacular ice chandelier awaits you. All the rooms feature special beds made of ice, covered with mattresses and reindeer pelts. The suites are unique rooms decorated with ice art and sculptures. Guests sleep in specially designed thermal sleeping bags. 6) A more recent addition to the hotel is the Ice Church, where weddings and christenings take place.
i. How was the concept of Icehotel born?
ii. How is the super-structure of the hotel created?
iii. What makes the first-view of the Icehotel ‘breathtaking’?
iv. An Ice Church is a useful addition to the hotel. How?
