The Taj Mahal is one of our historical monuments. It is situated on the bank
of river Yamuna in the city of Agra. The Taj is built of white marbles. It was
built by emperor Shahjahan. It is said that Shahjahan built this in memory
of his beloved queen Mumtaj. Mumtaj had requested the emperor to build a
memonial for her after her death. Shahjahan had promised to fulfil her wish
and he kept his promise. Many labourers. Stone cutters and jewellers worked
on it. Marbles and sand stones were brought from Makrana and Sikri. It took
twelve long years to build the central mausoleum. Mumtaj was buried just
below the dome. A likeness of the dome was built on the floor above so that
visitors could pay the homage without disturbing the peace of the place
where Mumtaj was actually resting. Such was the love of emperor Shahjahan
for his beloved Mumtaj.
