'The life of Shivaji was full of action and achievement. He built a
large and brave army and laid the foundations of an organised state
Just by force of his achievement and personality he shaped the
Marathas into a nation. Many of his qualities were rare in that age.
He performed not only the old Hindi religious rites, but also prae-
ticed a board minded toleration. Muslaman holy man was as
respectable to him as a Brahmin. He would cause no harm to any
holy building of Islam, He could punish severely. But he was not by
nature either cruel or blood thirsty. Towards women the displayed a
gentle treatment. The spiritual lessons which he had learned from
his mother were strengthened by his famous Guru Ramdas, Apart
