Ans: ‘He’ refers to the enemy soldier the narrator killed at the war front. The

narrator, though a soldier, was peace-loving, who was never prepared to shoot a

fellowman but being a soldier, had to shoot and kill his enemy.

ii)  Ans: The narrator, overcome by guilt, wished he had met the-man-he-killed by

an old inn because he would not have shot him and he could have survived.

iii)  Ans: If the two men had met at an old inn, they would have sat by the same table

and drunk many bottles of nipperkin together in great friendliness and they could  be thereafter lifelong friends.

iv) Ans: ancient
