The Indian elephant is one of the three recognised sub-species of the Asian elephant and native to Asian
past 60-75 years, the population of elephants has declined by 50% which is due to the loss of habitat and
poaching
The Asian elephants are smaller than African elephants. Indian elephants have smaller ears but relatively
broader skulls and larger trunks than African elephants. The toes are large and broad. Quite unlike their Africa
cousins, their abdomen is proportionate with the weight of the body. The African elephant has a large
abdomen as compared to the skull.
Indian elephants are found in India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Thailand and many other Asian countries. The
live in grasslands and forests. They consume 150 kgs of plant matter everyday which are are tall grasses,
various species of plants and trees,
Illegal killing of elephants, flourishing ivory trade and their shrinking habitat pose a great threat to their
existence.
