Lighthouses help ships to find their way. They also warn ships to keep clear of rocks and reefs. A lighthouse on the mainland is almost a little village. There are cottages round it. In these cottages the men who look after the lighthouse, live with their wives and families. On a small rock far out in the sea there is no place for cottages. The men live in the lighthouse tower and their families live on the mainland. There are three men in every lighthouse. They have to work very hard. At night they see that the light burns well, and one of them is always at the top of the tower. During the day the men clean the lamp and wash the glass round it. They also pump oil from the foot of the lighthouse up to the lamp. Some lighthouses have a fixed light, others have a light that flashes. There is an engine that makes the light flash. It has to be cleaned too. The men have also to paint the lighthouse both inside and outside. So, you see, they are kept busy.
