Equivalent resistance of a circuit connected in series is the sum of individual resistors. So when you compare, the equivalent resistance is much greater than the individual resistors.
But in case of parallel connection of resistors the equivalent resistance is smaller than the individual resisters.
since we add the inverse of each resistor value and equate with the inverse of their equivalent resistance.
