x + y = 4            (1)

2x - 5y = 1        (2)

  • From (1) we have

x = 4 - y

  • Putting this value of x in (2)

2 ( 4 - y ) - 5y = 1

⇒ 8 - 2y - 5y = 1

⇒ 8 - 7y = 1

⇒ 8 - 1 = 7y

⇒ 7 = 7y

⇒ y = 1.

  • Putting the value of y in (1) we have
  • x + 1 = 4
  • ⇒ x = 3

Thus, ( x , y ) = ( 3,1 )
