  1. Spines of Cactus are modified part of plant that is a leaf. In desert plants that is cactus it doesn't have leaves to reduce transpiration and to keep the water stored. As leaves need water to make food but as cactus have spines on it, it does not need water to make food. cactus store water in their rules for many days and they have fleshy fluid inside it that prevents transpiration.
  2. In Plants stems can also store some water but in cactus stems cannot store water as it have spines. So, all the water is stored in roots only.
