1. Suppose two negative charges –q each is placed at a distance “a” apart in air

To draw and explain:

  • Draw the electric field lines between the charges.

  • Can two electric field lines intersect?

Explaination:

Electrostatic Field lines cannot intersect because of the following reasons:

  • If the field lines intersected , then two tangents could be drawn at the points of intersection.

  • This would mean an external charge placed at that point would experience force in two directions , which is impossible.

  • Hence , Electrostatic Field lines don't intersect.
