1. Surtsey is a volcanic island near Iceland. Soon after it formed, some plants began to grow on the bare rock. The plants were only a few millimeters tall and had no roots. What were they? 2. Ten years later gulls began to nest on Surtsey and the number of flowering plants growing there suddenly increased. Suggest why?
