International date line

Created in 1884, the International Date Line runs through the middle of the Pacific Ocean and roughly follows the 180 degree longitude north-south line on Earth. It is located halfway around the world from the Prime Meridian – 0 degrees longitude in Greenwich, England.

The international date line acts as a "line of demarcation" separating two consecutive calendar dates. When you cross the data line, you become a time traveler of sorts! Cross to the west and it's a day later; go back and "you're back in time".

Despite its name, the international date line has no legal international status, and countries are free to choose which dates to observe. While the date line generally runs from north to south from pole to pole, it meanders around political boundaries such as eastern Russia and Alaska's Aleutian Islands.
