1. The diagram below shows 2 test tubes A & B. A test tubes
contains a green water plant. B test tube contains both a
green plant & a snail. Both are kept in sunlight.
Answer the following:
a) Name the physiological process.
b) What is the purpose of keeping a snail
in test-tube B?
c) Why does test tube 'B' have more 02-green bubbles of oxygen?
d) Give an example of water plant that can be used in the above experiment.
e) Write overall chemical equation for the above process.
Answers
Answer:
(i) In the given experiment, bubbles of oxygen are released due to the process of light reaction of photosynthesis.
(ii) Photosynthesis is a process in which green plants (plant cells having chlorophyll) take in carbon-dioxide and water in presence of sunlight to produce glucose. It releases oxygen gas during the photolysis of water which is a part of the light reaction.
(iii) The purpose of keeping the snail in the test tube B is the production of carbon dioxide which is used by the plant.
(iv) Test tube B have more bubbles of oxygen because the rate of photosynthesis is more in test tube B as it gets more CO2 from the snail.
(v) Hydrilla is a water plant which is used for such experiments.
