1. The F-4 was the first plane to break the speed of sound at sea level and could fly at 750 m/s at altitude. Calculate the Mach number.
Mach Number = speed of source of sound /speed of sound

Given,

The speed of F-4 plane is 750m/s

To find,

Calculate the Mach number.

Solution,

Mach number is the ratio of the speed of the sound source to the speed of sound. In general, it is the comparison of how many times the speed of sound is the speed of the object.

The speed of sound  = 343m/s.

Mach = speed of object/ speed of sound

          = \frac{750m/s}{343m/s} \\= 2.18

This shows the speed of F-4 is 2.18 times the speed of sound. Such high speeds also produce a sonic boom, a shock wave formed when the speed of an object breaks the sound barrier.

Therefore, the Mach number of F-4 plane is 2.18
