Let the smaller angle be x° . As both the angles are supplementary then Larger angle will be ( 180 - x )° . {Sum of supplementary angles is 180° }

Given, Larger angle = exceeds thrice the smaller by 20°

( 180 - x ) = 3(x) + 20

( 180 - x ) = ( 3x + 20 )

3x + 20 + x = 180

4x + 20 = 180

4x = 180 - 20

4x = 160

x = 160/4

x = 40

Smaller angle = x = 40°

Larger angle = 180 - x = 180 - 40 = 140°
