The "it" the author is referring to here is a n old roll top desk.It was made of oak and was of 19century.The author craved for it but it was too expensive.But then he found the roll top desk in. junk shop at Bridport in a very bad condition.It had a very low price.It had been clumsily mended,one side had scorch marks and the rolltop was in several pieces.But as he craved for it since a long time and as it was for cheap price he bought it thinking that he could repair it in his workroom on Christmas eve.So he removed the roll top and saw that the veneer has been lifted up like water damage and the fire and water had taken its toll too.He also opened the drawers.Thus trying to restore it..!!:-) :-)
