let the son's present age be X

so father's present age= 3X

5 years ago

son's age= X-5

father's age=3X-5

their sum=70

(X-5)+(3X-5)=70

X+3X-5-5=70

4X-10=70

4X=70+10

4X=80

X=80/4

X=20

so present age of son=20 years

   present age of father=20*3

                                          60
