2.14.2.5 Bergman Reaction

The Bergman reaction and intramolecular cyclization of enediyene compounds has been well-studied in solution chemistry [38,39]. The Bergman reaction is an attractive synthetic pathway: It is simple, byproduct-free, uses only one precursor and it does not necessarily require a catalyst. For these reasons it has attracted the interest for the on-surface synthesis of covalently conjugated nanostructures. Triple bonds present in alkynes allow the formation of aromatic molecules via cycloaddition resulting in two radicals (Fig. 6). In a classical solution-based Bergman reaction, these intermediate diradicals are saturated with hydrogen. But in on-surface synthesis, where hydrogen donors are not available, diradicals react at the surface via follow up cyclization involving dehydrogenation to form a polycyclic product [38,40].
