Answer:

  1. Depth finder. Depth finder, also called echo sounder, device used on ships todetermine the depth of water by measuring the time it takes a sound (sonic pulse) produced just below the water surface to return, or echo, from the bottom of the body of water.
  2. The weight is pulled back up and the distance from the surface mark to the weight ismeasured. This length equals the depth of the ocean at that point. This method of seafloor mapping is very time consuming, especially when charting deep water. The invention of sonar changed the way that the seafloor is mapped
  3. A deep-sea lead, the heaviest of sounding leads, was used in water exceeding 100 fathoms in depth. This technique has been superseded by sonic depth finders formeasuring mechanically the depth of water beneath a ship, one version of which is the Fathometer (trademark). The record made by such a device is a fathogram.
  4. Water depths are measured by soundings usually acquired by hydrographic surveys. The depths may be in either feet or fathoms (the chart will indicate which). A fathom is a nautical unit of measurement and is equal to six feet .
  5. SOnar devices are used to measure the depth of sea. A sound is send out and the echo monitered. We know the speed of sound in water.
