1) The sum of two numbers is 60. The greater number is 8 more than thrice the smaller number. Find
the numbers.
Solution : Let the two numbers, be x and y. x > y.
Then, from the first condition.
60
Thrice the smaller number is
From the second condition,
x=O+O..x-D=8
... (2)
Substracting equation (2) from equation (1),
r+ y = 60
.... (1)
x-3y = 8
.... (2)
+
..y=0
Substituting y = 13 in equation (1),
X+0 = 60 .. r= 60 -
Ans: The numbers are

Let's take the two variables as x and y,

According to the question,

x+y = 60 ....(i)

x = 3y+8

x-3y = 8 ....(ii)

Substituting the value of x from equation (i),

x = 60-y .... (iii)

Putting the value of x in equation (ii),

(60-y)-3y = 8

60-y-3y = 8

60-4y = 8

-4y = 8-60

-4y = -52

y = 13

Value of x = x+13 = 60

x = 47

The Value of x is 47 and y is 13.

I hope this helps.
