Onam is ayearly harvest festival, celebrated largely in the state of Kerala, and is a prevalent festival amongst the Malayalees. There are severaltraditions associated with the Onam festival. The 1stday of Onam is called as Attam, where ladies of the house would wake up early in the morning, take bath and wear new dress, along with adorning themselves with jewellery, customarily gold jewellery.
Children too wake early after bathing, collect flowers/petals for the Atha Pookalam custom, the main ceremony of the Attam. The Oonjal or swinging is another significant part of the Onam festival. In this a swing is slung on a tree’s high branch and exquisitely draped with flowers. It’s customary for youngsters to get on the swing and take turns for ride. Melodious songs are sung concurrently during the swinging ceremony or Oonjal and many folk songs have been devoted to this specific tradition.
