Given : The U.S. Energy Department states that 60% of all U.S. households have ceiling fans.

In addition, 29% of all U.S. households have an outdoor grill.

Suppose 13% of all U.S. households have both a ceiling fan and an outdoor grill.

A U.S. household is randomly selected.

To Find :  What is the probability that the household has a ceiling fan or an outdoor grill?

Solution:

ceiling fans.   = 60 %

outdoor grill.  = 29 %

both a ceiling fan and an outdoor  = 13 %

a ceiling fan or an outdoor grill  =  ceiling fans.   +  outdoor grill. - Both

= 60 % + 29 %  - 13 %

= 76 %

probability that the household has a ceiling fan or an outdoor grill = 76 %

= 76/100

= 19/25

= 0.76
