Explanation:
1) Meditation is a practice where an individual uses a technique – such as mindfulness, or focusing the mind on a particular object, thought, or activity – to train attention and awareness, and achieve a mentally clear and emotionally calm and stable state.[1]:228–29[2]:180[3]:415[4]:107[5][6] Scholars have found meditation elusive to define, as practices vary both between traditions and within them.
Great question. There will be many good answers here, mine will be from a New Testament perspective. Those words are found in Hebrews 10:24….”Consider how we might spur one another on to love and good deeds.”
Much of the NT is spent telling us there is no such thing as a good deed. No matter how apparently selfless a deed might be, the fact is that our egocentrism means nothing is done selflessly. Yes, we might have a very legitimate emotional response to a situation - a child needs xyz so we provide it - but to limit ourselves to those acts is selfish. We are not called to be selfless when we feel like it - “even the sinners do that” - but that is what we do. We do get involved in things like United Way, etc, but our motivations are not so much to make the world a better place, but to be the ones who have made the world a better place. In the end its about us.
So what is good? “Anything that is not of faith is sin (literally, “is missing the mark”).” A good deed would therefore be a faithful act. What is a faithful act? Faith is acting on God’s truth even if our emotions are at odds with it. Most of that truth is who Jesus created us to be the day he died for us. We have nothing to protect, nothing to prove, no unworthiness to hide. If Jesus has given us all the worth, love and affirmation we need, we can choose to no longer look for those things by earthly means or from others.
We can therefore choose to love those with whom we disagree. We can defer to others. We can choose to not need recognition. We can choose to put at risk things we once thought vital. We can choose to intentionally elevate others. We can choose actions that are motivated by none of the demands of the earthly kingdom we once bought into. Faith is choosing to do this, knowing that our human need for worth and affirmation will be met by Jesus. And it will be.
This is an unnatural act on this side of the divide, which is why the writer of Hebrews said to help each other maintain focus and faith.
