[1] There once was a tiger born into this world. Opening his eyes, he saw about him confining walls, and before him were bars of iron through which came air and light from outside. This tiger was born in a cage. [2] Here he grew in strength and beauty under the care of an invisible protecting hand. Hungering, food was ever at hand. Water was brought so he never thirsted. When he felt the need to rest, there was always a bed of straw upon which to lie. Here he found it good, licking his handsome flanks, to bask in the sunbeam, which he thought existed entirely to lighten his home. [3] Awakening one day from his rest, lo! the door of his cage stood open; an accident had opened it. In the corner, he crouched, wondering and fearing. Then slowly he approached the door, dreading the unfamiliar. He might even have closed it, but for such a task his four limbs were useless. So out of the opening he thrust his head instead and saw the canopy of the sky grow broader, and his world grew wider too. [4] Back to his corner, but not to rest, for the spell of the Unknown was upon him, so again and again he went to the open door, seeing each time more Light. [5] After one glorious moment standing in the flood of Light, and a deep indrawn breath — a bracing of strong limbs — with a bound he was gone. [6] On he rushed, in his wild flight, heedless(2) that he was wounding his sleek sides — seeing, smelling, touching all things; even stopping to put his lips to a pool of foul water, thinking it may be sweet. His limbs were heavy before he reached water that was good for his thirsting throat. [7] Hungering, there is no food at hand; he must seek and fight for nourishment. So does he live, seeking, finding, joying, and suffering. The door that accident had opened may be closed now, but the cage remains forever empty! Notes 1. the side of an animal’s body 2. taking no notice Which of the following describes the tiger's experience when he leaves his cage? (Paragraphs 6-7) A. He hurts himself and wants to return to his cage. B. He explores the world and appreciates what it has to offer. C. He becomes lost and does not know how to return to his cage. D. He expores the world but realizes it is not so different from his cage.
