(1) This is one of the earliest stories by Tolkien - the author of The Lord of the Rings. This is a fantasy tale about a fat farmer, his horse and his dog; and how he matches his wits against a cunning princely dragon called Chrysophylax. A foolish one-eyed giant, without meaning to, brings them up against one another.
(2) The giant takes a walk, loses his way and ends up at Giles's farm. He is nearly blind and tramples Giles' cows and sheep. Garm, Giles' dog yowls loudly and wakes his master up. Giles loads his blunderbuss (a gun that fires anything - rubbish, stones, bones, wires, nails) and goes off to check up. He sees the giant and in fear lets off the blunderbuss. Luckily, it hits the giant's eye. The giant thinks a wasp has stung him, stumbles around and walks off.
(3) Meanwhile, Garm awakens the village. They are stunned by Giles' doing. He becomes a hero and receives a sword from the king. What the king asks him to do then and how Giles meets the dragon makes up the rest of the story. The story is funny and fanciful from here on.
(4) A well-written story with adventure every step of the way, it allows you to lose yourself in a fantasy world of magical, mysterious creatures.
