Given  : Two bike rental companies have different pricing systems.

Company A charges a flat fee of $4 plus $2 per mile.

Company B does not charge a flat fee but charges $2.80 per mile driven.

To Find : At what distance do both companies charge the same amount?

Solution:

Let say  after d  miles both companies charge the same amount

Company A charges a flat fee of $4 plus $2 per mile.

Hence company A charges = 4 + 2d

Company B does not charge a flat fee but charges $2.80 per mile driven.

=> Hence company B charges = 0 + 2.8d

0 + 2.8d =  4 + 2d

=> 0.8d = 4

=> d = 5

At 5 miles  both companies charge the same amount
