Answer:

Rod A

Explanation:

There are two rods A and rod B of the same weight and length. It is given that rod A is thinner than rod B. We have to find which rod will sink more in the sand.

It depends upon the pressure exerted by the rods. The greater the pressure, the more it will sink. Now, we have to find which rod will exert more pressure on the sand. We know Pressure is given by:

  •             Pressure = Force / Area

Statements from the given formula:-

  1. Pressure is directly proportional to the force applied. This means If Force increases then Pressure will increase as well.
  2. Pressure is inversely proportional to the area. This means If the area of contact increases then The Pressure will decrease.

Because the Cross-sectional area of Rod A will be less than Rod B, Hence it will exert more pressure on the sand than rod B. You might notice that pressure also depends on the force as well. Here, Force is the weight of the rods here. Because the weight of both the rods is the same, Hence both will exert the same force on the sand.

Required Answer :-

Rod A will sink more than Rod B

Let's see why

Mass of Rod A = Mass of Rod B

Length of Rod A = Length of Rod B

Thickness of Rod A < Thickness of Rod B

This is because the Area occupied by rod B is greater than the area of Rod A But,

Rod A will have more pressure. Due to pressure the Rod A will sink more than Rod B

\\Since,

Area is inversely proportion to Pressure
