Convention: virtual distances are negative. Focal lengths of convex mirrors are negative. We should expect a negative focal length. Convex mirrors produce virtual images of real objects.

The wording of the question is confusing. I am not sure if the object is at 12 cm or the image is. I will take it that the object is:

Do = - 6 Di → Di = - 2 cm

1/f = 1/12 - 1/2 → f = - 12/5 cm matches the convention.
