Volpone was indeed a grim satire on man's acquisitive instincts.

  • Volpone's satire is described as greed stretching beyond money to include all artifacts of human desire.
  • He poses as if he was dying and convinces his three victims, Voltore, Corbaccio, and Corvino, to inherit his wealth and bring him expensive presents. Meanwhile, he was well and lusted after Corvino's wife, Celia.
  • Voltore accepts offer of giving wife in exchange for becoming his sole heir, satirizing both greed and desire. As the three greedy men planned and scheme to take Volpone's fortune, his unfaithful servant Mosca plots against them.
  • Much of evil Volpone initiates comes to fruition was most pessimistic aspect of this satire. People were willing to give up everything, including their families, daughters, and personal wealth, just to get a slice of Volpone's pie.
  • He mocks them, calling them vultures, ravens, and other raptors.  It is meant, as satire usually is, to make us examine our own greed and selfishness
