The Best Christmas Present in the world is peace and togetherness

Explanation:

The story, “The Best Christmas Present in the World” is a story with the backdrop of the war. The story revolves around the festive season of Christmas where the author finds a note inside his old desk. He tries to reach the owner of the note and deliver the note to her, which is actually a letter from her husband Jim during the war.

The best thing in life would be being together with your loved ones, be it your friends or family. It's love and togetherness that we crave both during the ups and downs of our life, in victory and defeat, in happiness and sadness, in health and illness. War tears you apart. It brings death and sadness. It is no solution to dispute.

I agree with the statement that war is not a solution to a dispute. In fact, war is not a solution at all. Instead, it adds to the problems.

From Jim Macpherson’s letter, we understand that there are many people involved in war, for he writes about the “hundreds of grey-coated men” living in the trenches. All the soldiers are normal men leading normal lives before the war. Jim was a schoolteacher from Dorset, England, while Hans Wolf plays the cello in the orchestra, and is from Dusseldorf, Germany. They are both from different countries, but all they want is for the war to end so that they “could all go home”.

The way in which Hans and Jim spend time together on Christmas, shows that neither the common man nor the soldier on the border has a problem with each other. Hans shared his sausages while Jim shared Connie’s “wonderful Christmas cake” with him. Men from both sides were “laughing, talking, drinking, eating”. In fact Hans and Jim “agreed about everything”. So, if the warring soldiers could understand each other, it is more than possible that the leaders of the two countries could also resolve the dispute simply by talking.

When the author meets Connie, he realises that she has been waiting for her husband Jim to come back from the war for so many years now, that she has lost her mind. She is left all alone in the world. The same must have happened to so many women in both England and Germany. So many families, including the family of the German Hans Wolf, must have been devastated. The soldier probably never got to see his 6 month old baby’s face again. Thus, war ruined families and caused a lot of pain and misery.

Putting all these reasons together, it is easy to understand why war cannot be a solution to any problem.
