  • Sound waves are produce
  • The vibrating object moves in one direction and compresses the air directly in front of it.
  • As the vibrating object moves in the opposite direction, the pressure on the air is lessened so that an expansion, or rarefaction, of air molecules occurs.
  • We know that we need a vibrating body for the production of sound. Can we hear the sound of all vibrating bodies?
  • The fact is that sounds of frequencies less than about 20 vibrations per second (20 Hz) cannot be detected by the human ear. Such sounds are called inaudible.
  • Sound is heard only if the body vibrates with a frequency of at least 20 Hz.
  • Frequency of vibration of the pendulum is less than 20 Hz.
  • Hence no sound is heard when the pendulum vibrates or oscillates in air.
