The major nutrients in our food are carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins and minerals. In addition, food also contains dietary fibres and water. Carbohydrates and fats mainly provide energy to our body. Proteins and minerals are needed for the growth and the maintenance of our body.

1)  A substance that provides nourishment essential for the maintenance of life and for growth.

2) Nutrients are compounds in foods essential to life and health, providing us with energy, the building blocks for repair and growth and substances necessary to regulate chemical processes. There are six major nutrients: Carbohydrates (CHO), Lipids (fats), Proteins, Vitamins, Minerals, Water.

3)Food provides our bodies with what they need to:

stay alive, be active, move and work;

build new cells and tissues for growth;

stay healthy and heal themselves;

prevent and fight infections.
