1) An oxbow lake is a lake that forms when a meander in a river is cut off from the rest of the river. It is shaped like a crescent, or the bow of an oxen yoke. A river meanders because of obstacles and patterns of erosion and deposition of sediments.

An ex bow lake is a crescent shaped lake which is formed when a meander gets cut off from the main river .

Formation -

1] As the river enters the plains it twists and turns forming large bends known as meanders .

2] Due to continuous erosion and deposition along the sides of these meanders the ends of these meanders loops come closer and closer .

3] In due course of time the meander loops cut off and form lakes called Ox bow lake .
