1. What are salient features of Monera?

  \bigstar\overbrace{ \underbrace{ \bold{Monera}}}

  • 1. Found in almost all habitats on Earth.

  • 2. Are unicellular prokaryotes.

  • 3. Does not have a well-defined nucleus in their cells.

  • 4. Shows asexual mode of reproduction.

  • 5. Size of their micro-organisms is small.

  • 6. Classified into archaebacteria, eubacteria, and cyanobacteria.

  • Example: Bacteria, cyanobacteria, et,cetera.

2. What will be the shape of a bacillus and coccus type of bacteria?

  • Cocci: These bacteria are oval in shape. These may be diplococci, streptococci, and staphylococci.

  • Rod-shaped: Bacilli are rod-shaped bacteria. These can be single or arranged together in pairs or groups. For eg., diplobacilli and streptobacilli.

3. Write a note on useful and harmful bacteria.

  \bigstar\overbrace{ \underbrace{ \bold{Usefulness \:  of  \: Bacteria}}}

  • Bacteria are used to make antibiotics like streptomycin and vitamin-B complex Tablets.

  • Bacteria are used in production of vinegar ,curd, cheese, etc.

  • Some useful bacteria live in the large intestine of human beings and produce vitamin-k,B-5 , biotin and B12 , e.coli.

  • Some bacteria are able to fix nitrogen from the atmosphere to enrich soil with nitrogen and increase it's fertility. These microbes are commonly called biological nitrogen fixers.

  \bigstar\overbrace{ \underbrace{ \bold{Harmful \:  Effects  \:  of  \: Bacteria}}}

  • Bacteria cause diseases in plants Eg.citrus canker,Potato scub.

  • Diseases like Cholera, tuberculosis are caused due to bacteria in human beings and animals.
