1- In ancient times, people used cubits, handspans, and measured using their hands, legs and strides.
Cubit: Length from the elbow to the tip of the middle finger
Handspan: length of the palm
These were then subdivided to further units for ease of measurement.
2-Nowadays we do not use this because it is inconsistent. The exact length of the palms and hands used may vary from person to person.
