Answer:

a)Two main factors affect the speed of sound: the material that makes up the medium—such as air or water—and the temperature. If we know the medium and the temperature, however, we can predict the speed of sound.

b)The differences between light and sound are as follows: Light can be considered to be made of waves as well as particles. Sound is only a wave. ... Sound waves require a material medium to travel, and hence, cannot travel in vacuum.

Answer:

1)

Since sound requires material medium for it's propagation, any factor which affects the medium also affects the velocity of sound. The factors are:

nature of medium: sound travels faster through solids than liquids, and travels the slowest through gases.

pressure: as pressure increases, the particles in the medium become more tightly packed and thus sounds can travel faster.

temperature: at higher temperature, the particles of the medium move faster, this the velocity of sound increases.

2)

Light:

• Does not require material medium for propagation.

• Traverse waves.

• Travel due to oscillations of electric and magnetic fields.

• Speed in air is 3×10⁸ m/s.

Sound:

• Requires material medium for propagation.

• Longitudinal waves.

• Travel due to continuous compressions and rarefractions of material columns.

• Speed in air is 343 m/s.
