The six humans were brought together by happenstance i.e. by a situation which seems to have been arranged on purpose, though it was accidental. They were trapped in a situation from which the cannot escape. They were in a place which was surrounded by extreme bitter and harsh cold.

'Tattered clothes' means that the person was very poor. He perhaps felt cold more than the others as he hitch his clothes a bit tighter to wry out some warmth from the inadequate clothing.
