(1) What do these lines mean?

1) The afternoon turned black.

2) The start of it (the quarrel) was slight.​

The first line means that there were black clouds in the relation of the two. Their afternoon was going on as usual until they began to fight. The meaning of the second line means that the siblings (or the two characters in the poem, I do not exactly remember it, sorry for that) had started the fight over something silly and minor.
