1) A magnetic material is a material that produces a magnetic field. An example of this is Iron.

2) It is all to do with the density of the object and the liquid. Water has a density of 1 so anything less than that will float and anything heavier than that will sink. This varies with each liquid for example mercury is denser so Iron would float in it whereas iron would sink in water.
