The formula of a substance tells us

  • The components of the substance.
  • The ratio in which the components are present.
  • It also tells us, the molecular mass of the substance.

Explaining with an example,

  • Water is a precious substance which is so much needed for life.
  • It's no joke that, Without water humans can't survive.

So, The chemical formula of Water is \sf H_{2}O

  1. We can tell from the formula that, Hydrogen and Oxygen are part of Water.
  2. We can also understand that, Hydrogen and Oxygen are present in 2 : 1 ratio.
  3. We can also understand the molecular weight of water is the sum of weights of hydrogen and oxygen ( 16 + 2 = 18)

Chemical formula can also help us to understand the combining ratio of atoms, with this knowledge, we may prepare the compounds at laboratory too.

There is a very lot of importance of Formula of a substance. Because of formula, we are able to understand and search on its components. Because of formulas, scientists research on the substances and it's components.

What does a formula tell about substance? :-

  • Because of formula of substance, we can get know about its components. And, the all mixtures of it.
  • We can know about the proportion of specific substance. Because of which, it becomes very easy to research on the substance.
  • Its chemical formula helps us to get know about the no. of atoms and molecules in it.

Example:-

Let's consider the example of Hydrochloric acid. We know the formula of Hydrochloric acid - H2SO4

In this formula, there are elements called Sulphur, oxygen and hydrogen. Also, because of formula, we are able to understand it's all components and compounds in it.

We can also know about it's Molar mass and molecular mass. We can also know about the proportion of the substance in it.
