in the story the old man at the bridge ,the old man tells the narrator that he is without politics .By this he is telling the narrator that he has no interest in the war and he is hopeless and knows that he will die .His condition is just like the goat he will not be able to survive .
he mentions his age because he wanted the narrator to know that he will not be able to walk any further because he was very tired .
