1 .What happens when a mixture of aluminium powder and powdered manganese(IV) oxide are heated? What type of reaction is it?

2. Write two observations when lead nitrate is heated in a test tube.

3. name one metal which displaces copper from copper(II) sulphate solution and another metal which does not.

4.What type of oxides are formed when non-metals combine with oxygen?

5. Define homologous series? State any two characteristics of a homologous series.

Answer:

1.As we can see in the above reaction that it is a single displacement reaction. It is the more reactive aluminium that displaces manganese from manganese dioxide. In other words we can say that, when we heat manganese dioxide with aluminium powder, aluminium powder will act as a strong reducing agent.

2.i) When Lead nitrate is heated it produces a yellow precipitate of Lead monoxide.

ii) It also produces a brownish colored fume (gas) which is Nitrogen dioxide along with oxygen

3.Zinc is the metal that can displace copper from copper sulphate solution and silver is the metal that does not displace copper from copper sulphate solution

4.All non metals form covalent oxides with oxygen which react with water to form acids or with bases to form salts. Most non metal oxides are acidic and form oxyacids which in turn yield hydronium ions in aqueous solution.

5.Characteristics of homologous series:

A group or a series of organic compounds in which each member contains the same characteristic functional group and differs from each other by a fixed unit form a homologous series and therefore its members are known as homologous.
